Use Competitors: comparing on the same questions

Compare your brand with observed alternatives on the same questions to find a specific difference worth exploring. This chapter explains when the comparison is fair and how to read share of search on Google alongside the observed answers.

Section 1

Check that the comparison is fair

You need comparison brands and comparable observations. Differences depend on questions, assistants, market and period; they are not an absolute ranking of companies.

  1. Check the included brands and selected market.
  2. Read each measure’s basis, then open the comparison by topic, assistant or source.
  3. Explore the answers showing a difference before choosing an intervention.

Section 2

From a gap to a question to solve

Read presence, sources, topics and trust dimensions separately. An advantage on one topic does not establish people’s overall preference or a share of sales.

From a gap between brands to an action

The steps from a difference observed between you and a competitor to work on your own facts, without imitating them.

  1. Read the presence

Compare how many answers name each brand, always with its base.

  2. Open the answers

Look at the answers on the topic where the alternative appears more often.

  3. Check the sources

Read the cited pages and the facts those answers report.

  4. Choose the work

Make your approved facts clearer, without copying someone else’s promises.

Section 3

Compare share of search on Google

Share of search shows how much your brand is searched on Google compared with the competitors you declared, in the same country, language and period. The values are relative Google Trends values, not search volumes.

Share of search is not market share. A name that is also a common word collects searches that are not about the brand, and an interval without a value stays out of the calculation instead of counting as zero. If the same comparison was read in the last few days, you find it in the list without new credits.

  1. In Competitors, open Share of search and read the comparisons already received, with the period table and the trend over time.
  2. If your role manages the brand, choose up to four competitors and the period in New comparison, then use Request a quote.
  3. Check brand, country, period and the maximum cost in credits, give your consent and confirm: if the reading does not arrive, the credits become available again.
