What it looks after
Clear pages, verifiable facts, reachable sources.
GEO guide
Generative Engine Optimization makes a brand clear, verifiable and citable for AI assistants. Find out what it means, how it differs from SEO and how it is measured without promises.
In brief
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: the work on content and sources that makes a brand understandable to the systems that generate answers.
Clear pages, verifiable facts, reachable sources.
Mentions, recommendations and citations in answers, not rankings.
It does not decide what an assistant will write: it works on sources and checks.
Where it comes from
When an engine answers with text instead of a list of links, the question changes: no longer where I appear, but whether I am named, how and on which sources.
The term refers to “generative engines”: systems that combine and summarise several sources with a language model. Alongside GEO, people use AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and “AI search optimization”: they describe the same work from closely related angles.

How the question a brand asks itself changes when an engine answers with a text instead of a list of links, on three aspects.
| With a list of links | With a generative engine | |
|---|---|---|
| The question | In what position does my page appear? | Am I named, and in what words? |
| The evidence | The result on a search page. | The sentence in the answer and the sources it shows. |
| The work | Optimising pages, structure and links. | Making facts explicit in the sources the engine reads. |
SEO and GEO
Clear content, reachable pages and verifiable information serve both. What changes is what you observe: a position among the results or a presence inside an answer.
| Aspect | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| What is observed | Rankings and clicks on a results page. | Mentions, recommendations and citations in an answer. |
| Unit of measure | The query and the page. | The question, the assistant and the answer. |
| Stability | Relatively stable results. | Variable answers: repeated collections are needed. |
| Where the work happens | Pages, structure, links. | Pages, explicit facts, independent sources. |
Every signal, its own evidence
A GEO strategy rests on observable signals. Each one answers a precise question and has its evidence in the collected answers.
| Question | Signal | Where you read it |
|---|---|---|
| Does AI know me? | Mentions in answers | AI mentions |
| How does it describe me? | Claims compared with the facts | AI accuracy |
| Which sources is it based on? | Cited pages | AI citations |
| Does it recommend me or a competitor? | Recommendations compared | Competitors |
| Is it working? | Changes on the same questions | Before-and-after measure |
Misconceptions to avoid
Recognising them protects the budget and the credibility of the work.
Filling a page with sentences «for the models» does not make information truer or more useful.
No one decides what an assistant will recommend: anyone who promises it is selling hope.
A percentage without questions, assistants, market and period says nothing.
The first month
A GEO strategy starts from an honest measure of the starting point, works on a few pages and verifies on the same questions.
Category, comparison, features, support.
Mentions, recommendations and citations, with their base.
Where sources show a gap, one change at a time.
Same questions; if the assistants change, a control group.
Frequently asked questions
Whether GEO and AEO are the same thing, how long it takes to see a change, why GEO does not replace SEO and what TrustInsider does for you and what it does not.
They are close terms. AEO puts the accent on answer engines, GEO on generative systems. In practice they describe the same work.
There is no fixed time: it depends on when sources are updated and read again. That is why it is measured with repeated collections, not against a deadline.
No. Many answers cite pages that can also be found in search. GEO adds a measure that SEO alone does not see.
It measures answers, finds gaps and sources, proposes interventions and checks results. Your team decides and approves content changes.
