Source coverage

Why source coverage changes the result

A change in the observed sample can change the result. Check coverage before interpreting a trend.

What you get

Define the observation scope

Record the entity, country, language, period and authorised channels. An inaccessible, unlicensed or unconnected source is a coverage gap, not proof that nobody discussed your brand.

Check sources, historical archives and available fields: metadata, excerpts and usable text do not offer the same depth. Technical access also requires rights for analysis, retention and presentation to clients. An ordinary web search does not replace a licence for a full-text press review; delays and conditions remain specific to each channel.

What a source without results means
StatusInterpretationWhat to verify
Source not connected or authorisedThat channel is not included in collection.Technical availability and rights before expanding scope.
Incomplete collectionPart of the period or results may be missing.Quotas, errors and retrieval depth; do not replace missing data with zero.
Collection completed without matchesNo relevant observations emerged within the intended sample.Identity and search criteria, without inferring silence across the entire market.

What you get

Coverage has boundaries.

Before using the report in a new market, check the publications, platforms, languages and historical period actually included. Extensive Italian coverage does not justify conclusions about Spanish conversations: the provider’s scope should make that difference clear.

Distinct perspectives
  1. Covered markets
  2. Available languages
  3. Historical depth

What you get

Independent evidence

Distinguish the number of domains reached from the number of independent origins. A network of websites republishing one press release may broaden distribution without adding accounts; retain the origin and record reprints separately.

Information context
  1. Verifiable origin
  2. Linked republications
  3. Domains reached

What you get

Collection status

Distinguish a completed collection with no relevant results from a failed or incomplete collection. Only eligible observations belong in the stated denominator.

Reading path

  2. Observation eligibility
  3. Declared calculation base

Availability and limitations

Distinguish silence from an interruption.

No mentions found and no successful collection are different outcomes. The first concerns an actually observed scope; the second cannot describe your brand’s presence.

Reports should make delays, errors and excluded sources identifiable. A new connection may increase content volume without indicating greater awareness. For historical comparisons, use a shared scope or indicate where the new coverage begins.

What the source status allows you to conclude
Observed statusSupported conclusionNext step
Successful collection, no relevant contentNo matches within the queried scope and period.Check identity, queries and stated coverage.
Error, delay or partial collectionMaterial availability is incomplete.Record the limitation and check the service before comparing.
Channel not contracted or use not permittedThat material does not contribute to the analysis.Qualify the provider and required uses.

Complementary sources

Connect the context. Keep the differences.

A publication may describe an episode that later appears in forums and AI answers. Connecting these references helps reconstruct the narrative without turning them into three independent events.

Retain origin, date, URL and relationships between material where verifiable. Do not infer causation from sequence alone. Sources retain distinct coverage and rights: a story present in one channel is not necessarily available in the others.

Access

Check channels, markets, languages and period exposed by the service.

Usage

Check which material may be analysed and shown to recipients.

Continuity

Make delays, interruptions and source changes identifiable.
