How search is changing

Search becomes an answer.

More and more people ask a question and receive a written answer, with names, recommendations and sources. Find out what changes for a brand, what public sources say and how to read it with verifiable data.

In brief

What is changing, in three points.

AI assistants and summaries generated inside search engines answer with text that steers the choice before the click.

The answer arrives written

In a confident tone, and often with a recommendation.

The choice starts earlier

Some names are there, others are not, before any visit.

The brand’s question changes

Am I named, recommended and cited in the answers that matter?

Two paths

From a list of links to an answer.

In traditional search the person chooses which sites to open. In a generated answer part of the choice has already been made.

The change concerns two places: assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude, which people ask for advice in conversation; and the search engines themselves, which show a generated overview with its sources above the results.

Where the choice happens, in the two paths

The two search paths read at three moments: who chooses which sites to open, where names appear and which source guides the decision.

StageList of linksGenerated answer
Who choosesThe person, opening sites one by one.Partly the assistant, before any click.
Where names appearIn the result titles, one per page.Within the text, with a few chosen names.
What guides the choiceThe title and description of each page. The sources the text cites alongside.

How to read the numbers

Forecasts, announcements and studies are not equivalent.

Many unsourced numbers circulate on this topic. Before using one, ask yourself what kind of figure it is and whether you can open the original document: a figure that does not lead to its source has no place in a decision.

A forecast indicates a direction; it does not measure your market. The reliable way to know what is happening to your brand is to observe the answers to your questions, with a stated method.

Three kinds of public data on search
NatureWhat it saysHow to use it
ForecastA direction estimated by an analyst for the market as a whole. It shows where to look; it does not measure your market.
AnnouncementWhat a search engine states it has changed in its results. It tells you what searchers can see, not how often they see it.
StudyAn experiment with a declared method and sample. It holds under the sample’s conditions: check it on your own questions.

Without a visit

The first impression, before the site.

People who ask an assistant for advice can decide without opening your site. The description they receive becomes, for them, your brand.

That is why «where do we rank on Google?» is no longer enough. Three more questions are needed: are we named, are we recommended, which source talks about us? They are the questions of GEO.

Measurement habits

Three rules for reading the new search.

AI search is less stable than a results page: the same question can get different answers.

Repeat over time

One answer is one observation: repeated collections are what count.

Keep channels apart

Organic results, AI overviews and assistants do not add up.

Follow the sources

Cited pages tell you where to work better than any percentage.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the new search.

Whether SEO still matters, how to read forecasts of a decline in search, why AI answers vary from person to person and how observing your brand begins.

Is SEO no longer needed?

It is still needed: search results remain and many AI answers cite pages that can also be found in search. What changes is that it is no longer enough on its own.

Do forecasts of a decline in search apply to my sector?

A general forecast concerns overall volume. To know what is happening in your sector, observe your customers’ questions.

Are AI answers the same for everyone?

No. Assistant, mode, language, market and personalisation change the answer. That is why every observation declares its conditions.

How do I start observing my brand?

Choose a few questions that matter, collect the answers and read mentions, recommendations and citations. That is TrustInsider’s first check.
