Sources of AI answers

The sources behind AI answers.

When an AI answer shows its sources, it shows you which pages your brand’s story rests on. Learn to read them, to recognise the ones you can improve and to turn them into work priorities.

In brief

Sources tell you where to work.

Many AI answers show the pages they draw on. It is the most concrete clue to where to act.

Four families

Your site, independent sources, reviews and forums, press.

One job per family

You write, check, listen or ask for a correction.

An observed fact

A cited source is not a recommendation: read it with the sentence it supports.

Source families

Where an answer comes from.

The sources cited in answers about a brand almost always fall into four families. Recognising them tells you straight away who can act, and how.

Sources, counted

Which pages recur in the answers.

Cited sources shows which pages recur in answers about your brand and your competitors, by question, assistant and period. From a source you go back to the answer and the question.

Four questions

How to read a citation.

A useful citation is read together with the sentence it supports. These four questions turn a link into information you can act on.

What you can change

Work on the sources that depend on you.

You do not choose which sources an assistant will use. You can make your pages clearer, check independent ones and respond to real experiences.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the sources of AI answers.

Why a cited source is not a recommendation, why a competitor is cited and you are not, what we know about how sources are chosen and when an answer shows them.

Is a cited source a recommendation?

No. A citation indicates a page linked to the answer, not a preference. The recommendation is read in the text and counted separately.

Why is a competitor cited and not me?

Often their page answers the question more explicitly. Compare the two pages on the same information before rewriting.

Do you know why a model chooses a source?

No, and no one outside can know. You observe the sources shown and how often they recur: that is measurable, the model’s internal choice is not.

Do all answers show sources?

No. It depends on the assistant and the mode. Citations are counted only on answers where sources can be assessed.
