Comparing share of voice
Compare brands using the same sources, period and counting rules.
What you get
A sound comparison keeps competitors, source family, period, geography and counting method consistent. Syndicated copies of an article should not simulate superiority; changes in source access should be recorded rather than interpreted as company performance.
The competitor group is part of the measure: retain its version and apply the same criteria to brands, aliases and products. Document attributions when content mentions several entities. Conversations, search results and AI answers have different units; they do not form a single percentage without an explicit methodology.
Document competitors, channels, market and period before calculating shares.
Treat attribution, duplicates and excluded content consistently for every subject.
Examine the reasons for presence: a high share may accompany an issue rather than success.
What you get
Before calculating a share, decide whether to count content items or mentions. If an article names three competitors, document how it contributes to the total: the report should allow your brand’s numerator and the comparison denominator to be reconstructed.
What you get
A share based only on national press cannot be compared with one also including international forums. Prepare the same channel selection for every competitor and keep excluded markets identifiable.
What you get
To place share of voice next to presence in the answers of the qualified AI engines, use two separate tables. In the first the total comes from the collected content; in the second from the valid answers to the panel. Do not add the percentages: they explain different phenomena.
Changes to interpret
A brand may maintain its mention count yet lose share because a competitor is mentioned more. It may also appear to grow because a source in the group is no longer available.
Always read absolute values and shares together. Retain group composition and separate scope updates from changes observed under constant conditions. If a significant part of collection is missing, qualify or suspend the comparison rather than fill it with estimates.
| What changes | Possible effect on share | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A competitor’s mentions increase | Your brand’s share may fall while volume stays unchanged. | Counts by subject, topics and the origin of the increase. |
| A new competitor enters the group | The denominator changes. | Group version and comparison within the shared scope. |
| A source is interrupted | The observed distribution may change without a market change. | Coverage and periods actually available for everyone. |
From visibility to meaning
A high share may accompany a launch, technical discussion or crisis. Topics, sentiment and type of presence explain why your brand occupies space in the conversation.
In AI, an answer naming your brand is not a recommendation. In the press, more reprints of one story do not necessarily provide more independent accounts. Use share to identify where to investigate and connect conclusions to evidence. Share of voice does not measure sales, market share or the preferences of all customers.
