What you buy
A space marked as an ad, for chosen questions and markets.
AI assistant ads
Advertising in ChatGPT and other AI assistants is a paid space that appears alongside answers, where the provider offers it, and must be recognisable as an ad. It does not buy the organic answer: here is how to tell them apart and measure it.
In brief
An ad in an assistant or an AI summary is paid content, shown with a label. The generated answer is something else: it is built with sources, not with budget.

The mention or recommendation in the organic answer.
Ads and organic answers, always separately.
Two distinct spaces
Anyone reading an answer must be able to tell what is paid for. For a brand, the two spaces require different work and are measured differently.
In the European Union, the Digital Services Act (Regulation (EU) 2022/2065, Article 26) requires online platforms to make every advertisement recognisable and to state on whose behalf it is shown.
The two spaces in which a brand can appear next to a question asked to an AI assistant, compared on how they are obtained, recognised and measured.
| Organic answer | Announcement | |
|---|---|---|
| How you get it | With clear, verifiable sources that others cite. | With a budget, an audience and chosen questions. |
| How you recognise it | It is the text of the answer, with its sources. | It carries a label declaring it an ad. |
| How long it lasts | As long as the sources remain valid and up to date. | As long as the paid campaign runs. |
| How it is measured | Mentions, recommendations and citations over time. | The campaign’s impressions, clicks and conversions. |
Where they appear
Ads linked to AI answers are not available everywhere: they depend on the provider, the country and the type of question. Before planning, check what is active in your market.
Three surfaces where an ad can appear next to a generated answer, what it usually shows and what to check before investing.
| Surface | What it shows | To check first |
|---|---|---|
| AI summaries in search | Ads linked to the search, above or within the summary. | In which countries and languages they are active. |
| Conversational assistants | Ads separate from the answer, where offered. | For which plans and questions the provider shows them. |
| Product results | Sponsored product listings next to the recommendations. | Whether your catalogue is eligible and up to date. |
When to try it
An ad makes sense where the question is commercial and the brand is absent from organic answers. You test on a small scale, measure separately and decide with data.

Where answers already name you, and where they don’t.
Commercial ones where you are absent and that drive sales.
One market, a few questions, a limited budget and an end date.
Campaign metrics, kept apart from organic ones.
Continue, change questions or work only on sources.
Measure without confusing
Adding ads and organic mentions into one indicator makes a presence that was only bought look as if it has grown. The two results are read side by side, not added up.
The measures to keep separate when a brand tests ads linked to AI answers, what each one tells you and the error avoided by keeping them distinct.
| Measurement | What it says | Mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Ad impressions | How many times the ad was shown. | Reading them as mentions in answers. |
| Clicks and conversions | What the campaign produces. | Attributing them to organic presence. |
| Organic mentions | Whether answers name the brand. | Counting the ads in them. |
| Organic recommendations | Whether answers recommend the brand. | Thinking an ad will make them grow by itself. |
Frequently asked questions
Whether you can pay to be recommended, how to recognise an ad, whether advertising helps organic presence and how to start.
No. You can buy advertising space where the provider offers it, marked as an ad; the organic answer cannot be bought.
It carries a label declaring it advertising. In the European Union, the Digital Services Act requires advertising on platforms to be recognisable.
There is no reason to take it for granted. To find out, you measure organic answers before, during and after the campaign, on the same questions.
With organic measurement: knowing where you are already present avoids paying for questions where answers name you for free.
