Education and training

The academic year has a calendar of questions.

Students and families ask AI assistants what to study, where and on what terms, and they ask at specific times of the year. TrustInsider measures your institution’s presence in each period, with the facts the answers report.

Four moments

From what to study to when to enrol

The questions of people choosing a course of study follow the year: first inspiration, then comparing institutions, then deadlines and finally the entry rules. Each moment asks your pages for different facts.

Months before enrolment, people ask which courses exist and where a subject is taught well. Closer to the deadlines they ask about dates, costs, requirements and entrance tests. After admission they ask about accommodation, grants and services. And some people use the answer to cross an institution off the list before even visiting its website.

Guidance questions in the four periods of the year

Four periods in choosing a course of study: what students and families ask in each and which fact, on the institution’s pages, decides the answer.

PeriodWhat they askFact that must be right
DiscoveryWhich courses exist and in which subjectsThe course offering for the current year
ComparisonWhere to study and with which servicesThe course pages and student services pages
DeadlinesAdmission dates, costs and requirementsThe admissions page with the year stated
After admissionAccommodation, grants and canteensThe services pages, updated and dated

Dates and fees

The fee from two years ago, stated as current

During the enrolment period, outdated information is costly: a wrong deadline means a missed opportunity, an old fee changes the choice. Assistants often repeat what they find on pages that are no longer up to date.

A previous year’s admissions page left online is a perfect source for a wrong answer: it has all the data, in the right form, but for the wrong year. The cure is to state the academic year on every page and archive old versions with their year, rather than leaving them next to the new ones.

Avoid: the answer reports the fee and deadlines of the previous academic year, taken from an admissions page left online. Do: admissions pages carry the year and the update date, with the data in structured form, and old ones are archived.

Courses and universities

A course attributed to the wrong institution

When the course offering changes, the answers lag behind: a course that has moved, closed or been renamed keeps appearing, sometimes under the name of another institution in the same city.

It is checked by comparing the answer with the country’s official register of courses. When your list of courses matches that register, with the name, code and location of each course, a wrong attribution immediately meets a source that contradicts it.

In the city you could look at the Demo Institute, where you’ll find a degree course in communication design with workshops on the city-centre campus. This is reported by a guidance portal in its course guide.

  1. Mention

The institution makes it into the answer: it is named among the possible choices.

  2. Error

The course belongs to another university in the same city, not to this one.

  3. Source

The portal’s guide hasn’t been updated since the course offering changed.

Questions that change

A question panel for each period

Measuring in October the questions people ask in March gives a false picture. The education panel is built by period, and the comparison only holds between cycles with the same questions.

GEO monitoring keeps a group of questions for each period of the year and compares it with the same period of the previous cycle, with the same questions and the same assistants. That way spring sees the questions about deadlines, and autumn those about choosing a course.

How an institution’s panel follows the enrolment calendar

Four steps in the work on a seasonal panel: choose the period, collect the answers, compare them with the same period of the previous cycle and update the pages before the deadline.

  1. Chooses the period

Each period of the year has its own group of guidance questions.

  2. Collects

The cycle’s answers come in on the same questions and from the same assistants.

  3. Compare

The cycle is read alongside the same period of the previous cycle.

  4. Updates

The pages that need to change are fixed before the deadline.

The same questions from September to July

Avoid: guidance questions stay identical all year, and the spring cycle doesn’t see the requests about deadlines. Do: a group of questions per period, compared with the same period of the previous cycle.

Search and answers

Your presence in search, period by period

For an institution, assistants’ answers and Google and Bing results often tell the same story with different sources. The platform keeps them side by side and shows you how they change from one period to the next.

The glimpse shows the Search indicators on a demo brand: the average position on Google and on Bing, the share of searches in the top ten results and the AI summaries that cite the website, each next to the previous period. For an institution it is guidance questions that fill that panel; AI visibility tells you whether assistants name you for the same questions, and AI claims checks dates, fees and requirements against your pages.

Distance learning

Online learning: the calendar is always open

Those who sell online courses don’t have a single enrolment season, but questions that change with editions and promotions. The typical risk is a course described with the syllabus or the price of a past edition.

In answers about online courses, what matters is duration, format, certificate awarded, price and the date of the next edition. When the assistant takes these facts from a resale platform or an old review, the person arrives with the wrong idea of the course. The work is the same as for the classroom, at a different pace: each edition has its own dated page, closed ones stay archived, and the panel follows editions rather than months.

A dedicated page

Universities: admission tests, subjects and student communities

Universities have their own questions, by subject and by entry rules, and their own sources such as student communities. That is why they have a dedicated page, which this one doesn’t repeat.

On the universities page you’ll find how to read a university’s presence by subject, why an abolished admission test can remain mandatory in the answers and how student discussions enter the sources.

Four types of institution by weight of calendar and subject

Schools, universities, business schools and online learning, positioned by how much their questions depend on the time of year and how much the subject matters, without numbers.

How much the subject matters

How much the question depends on the period

  1. Schools

Families ask mostly in the enrolment months, by area more than by subject.

  2. Universities

Questions follow the call for applications and are almost always asked by degree course.

  3. Business schools

Programmes with several admission windows, chosen by specialisation.

  4. Online learning

Editions spread across the whole year, chosen by the skill to be acquired.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about AI visibility in education

When to measure, where outdated fees come from, what the difference is between Search and AI visibility and how online learning is organised.

In which months should a school’s or a university’s presence be measured?

In all the periods when the questions change: discovery, comparison, deadlines and after admission. Each period has its own group of questions, compared with the same period of the previous cycle.

Why does an answer report a fee that no longer exists?

Because an old page can still be reached or because a third-party source has copied it. What you need is a page with the academic year stated and the previous versions archived.

Do Search and AI visibility measure the same thing?

No. Search looks at Google and Bing results for guidance questions; AI visibility looks at whether assistants name and recommend you. Side by side, they show which pages support both.

Does an online learning provider need a different panel?

Yes, because its calendar follows course editions more than the months of the school year. Questions are grouped by edition.
